Ricoh GX100 is amazing!! Electronic Viewfinder accessory is not.
by .. Randy Shelton (San Francisco, CA United States)
This review is for the GX-100 camera kit including electronic viewfinder, the HA-2 adapter, the lens hood, and of course, the Ricoh Caplio GX-100 camera.
I don't have much to say about the camera except that it's amazing. Lens quality is excellent and for a small sensor camera, the image quality is super duper at low ISO. There is very little noise. As with most other reviews, anything above 400 ISO gets way too noisy for my taste. Look up some of the images on Flickr as well as some of the more serious reviews on the internet for more information. For the price, the camera can take some beautiful shots and has the functions of most DSLRs including RAW. Although RAW write time is a little slow. Overall, I'm loving it!!
The lens adaptor and lens hood are very nice. The quality of both is good. The HA-2 adapter allows for use of filters, which is also nice. I have a UV on mine. My camera kit also came with a Lowepro camera neoprene camera case. While I like Lowepro, the case is a snug fit and is only big enough to hold the camera with no accessories. Overall though, it's a nice little case is you're a Lowepro fan. The kit also includes an extra battery which works great as does the wall charger. It's always nice to have an extra battery with wall charger.
That is the good stuff. Now the bad. The electronic viewfinder (EV) accessory is no comparison to even a mediocre traditional viewfinder. In truth, I find the EV to be terrible. I had read this before purchasing the kit but I do like having a viewfinder even if it's not a very good one. I bought the kit knowing I would save some money by not buying the EV separately. The EV works but is just not up to par with the quality of the rest of the camera. The EV allows you to see what your shooting, as it should, but the subject is blurry and muddied due to screen resolution inside of the EV being rather low. It's a cool idea but I would much rather have a traditional viewfinder that doesn't display camera settings but that actually works rather than this electronic blurry thing. The concept is cool but it falls short of producing good results.
In conclusion, I would recommend everything in the kit except the EV. I suppose that as long as you're going to be buying all of the other items anyway, you may as well buy the kit. If you are buying the kit because you want the EV, I would say avoid it and just get the camera because you will be disappointed in the EV.
